On the 9th of February 2022, the Women’s Forum of Dakshin Kamrup College, Mirza in collaboration with IQAC of the college organized A Gender Awareness Programme to commemorate the 13th year of the formation of the women’s forum. The awareness programme took place at Ganesh Para, an adopted village by the Dakshin Kamrup College, Mirza.
The programme was inaugurated by the President of the Women’s Forum, Dr. Aditi Choudhury, followed by the secretary of the forum Prof. Ellora Choudhury, who presented the objective of the meeting. A speech was given by the Principal of the college, Dr. Nabajyoti Das to appreciate the initiative taken by the women’s forum and how the children of the adopted village always have the gates of DKC, Mirza open for their higher studies. Dr. Jilmil Bora, the coordinator of the IQAC, Dakshin Kamrup College, Mirza, also mentioned in her speech as to how different departments of the college has visited to the adopted village for various kind of surveys and field works and this programme was also organized to spread awareness among the resident of the village regarding gender equality and awareness towards the use of sanitary pads. Few words on the issue of gender equality and the plethora of role played by a woman in every household was spoken up by Dr. Namita Sarma, the Advisor of the Women’s Forum.
A few students of the Dakshin Kamrup College, Mirza, performed a street play titled “TRP” on the theme of how the rape victims/girls are always blamed for the crimes that happened to them, rather then the culprits by the media and the society. The street play instigated the general people to stop thinking girls/women as a burden and judging them by their clothes. The play also upholds the fact that just by doing candle march and processions would not solve the problem, it is the support and positive attitude towards the victims that will give them a reason to live with their heads held high.
By the end of the street play, surgical masks and sanitary pads were being distributed among the residents of Ganesh Para, by Prof. Pranita Kakati and other members of the forum. The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Niva Thakuria, the Vice President of the women’s forum, DKC, Mirza.
