A workshop on the Basic
Technicalities of Photography was organised by Center for Media Studies
(Department of Journalism & Mass Communication) in collaboration with IQAC,
Dakshin Kamrup College, Mirza, on the 3rd of December 2022. The
workshop started at 11 AM sharp, with the welcome speech given by Ananya
Sharma, a 1st semester student of the department and presenting of a
fulam gamusa to the invited guest Mr. Neeraj Kr. Phookan by Abhilasha Pathak,
Assistant Professor of the department.
About the Invited
Guest: Neeraj Kumar Phookan
Mr. Phookan is an
Assistant Professor at Royal Global University. He is an Executive Member and
Treasurer of Photography Club of Assam and is currently pursuing PhD at Centre
of Management, Dibrugarh University.
About the Event:
The workshop was
organised as a part of the Regular Generic Course paper on Photography for the
5th semester and was open for all the semesters pursuing BA in Mass
Communication. A total of 30 students participated in the workshop from 1st,
3rd and 5th semester combined altogether. The workshop
was organised for the better understanding on the key concepts of photography,
how to visualize a story and sketch it in a photographic format using the right
camera angle, light, having the basic knowledge of exposure, framing and
various photographic techniques, which are some of the basic knowledge that a
student of Mass communication must possess.
In a nutshell, the
following topics were being discussed in the workshop:

Camera and its components, how it
functions.
·
Identifying the frame and applying Rule
of Thirds.
·
The concept of grid and frames.
·
Placement of the primary object at the
right intersection crash point.
·
Light and Exposure (Shutter Speed,
Aperture control, ISO, etc).
·
Storytelling through photography.
·
Composition of photographs.
·
Captioning of photographs and how it
helps in conveying the photographer’s story/POV to the spectators.
By the end of the
workshop Mr. Phookan shared a message with the students that in order to get
better results in capturing beautiful pictures through camera, one needs to
enjoy the art of photography. The workshop ended with an end note given by Shabnam
Shahin, HoD of the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Dakshin
Kamrup College, Mirza, thanking the invited guest for presenting the workshop
and also the students for participating enthusiastically. Light refreshments
were distributed among the students and certificates of participation was also
presented to the them at the end of the workshop.
